Here is what we do in
Year 1 and Year 2
The National Curriculum
Working within the framework of the National Curriculum children are provided with
stimulating activities from a range of subjects. The main subjects - referred to
as "core" subjects are English, Mathematics and Science . The other subjects
known as the "foundation" subjects are Welsh, Information & Communications Technology,
Religious Education, Art, Design & Technology, Physical Education, History, Music and
Geography. (Please follow this geography link

English and the Literacy Hour
Our Literacy Hour builds on early experience in contexts meaningful to the
children. This includes contexts relevant to different cultural backgrounds,
providing children with opportunities to extend their use of English, focusing on
enjoyment and pleasure in using language. It provides children with many
opportunities to share books, to respond to stories and poems and to talk and
write for a variety of purposes. Reading and writing skills are taught specifically
during the daily Literacy Hour although of course other subject areas also provide
many opportunities to practise and develop these skills in a meaningful and
stimulating way.
Mathematics

The "Numeracy Strategy" too builds on early experience in contexts meaningful to
the children, including those relevant to different cultural backgrounds. The
activities stimulate the children's interest and help to develop basic numeracy
skills they will need in adult life, in a practical and enjoyable way. The
curriculum emphasises the knowledge, skills, understanding and use of number,
algebra, measures, shape and space as well as data handling.
Activities focus on the early development of intellectual and practical skills that allow children to enter the world of science and develop a wider understanding of scientific phenomena. Emphasis is placed on scientific exploration and investigation. Exciting topics encourage communication and lead toward an understanding of the applications and implications of science.
