Come and explore our Nursery and Reception Classes
In the early years of Nursery and Reception, it is recognised that children need a play curriculum rich in practical experiences. These are carefully organised in order to provide a sound foundation for later learning. Teachers work together to ensure that the 6 Desirable Learning Outcomes are covered both inside the classroom and outdoors.
"The quality of the under-five curriculum is good; a wide range of stimulating and well-planned experiences provide pupils with a sound foundation in preparation for the National Curriculum."
--School Inspection (1998)
"The curriculum for the under-fives appropriately promotes the Desirable Outcomes; a broad range of relevant and interesting learning experiences is provided in the nursery and reception classes. Teaching in the nursery and reception classes is well focused, relevant and lively."
--School Inspection (2004)
The Nursery consists of attractive play corners; a practical area for sand/water play, painting, gluing and dough; a quiet room for stories and reading books; a home corner and an enclosed outdoor play area for bikes and other large apparatus. There are also opportunities to explore mathematical, scientific and constructional materials.
Children are accepted into the Nursery at the age of three. Before entering Nursery a letter of invitation is sent to the child inviting him or her to visit. In fact, parents and little ones are welcome to drop in frequently in order to ease the transition from home to school. An informal meeting is held with the headteacher when the Nursery is nearing its capacity. This is usually in the Spring Term.
A liaison meeting is arranged every year for future Reception parents in order to discuss full time school procedures.
The Reception classroom is in the newly renovated caretaker's flat situated above the Nursery. It is a large, attractive area, with corners for sand/water play, painting, gluing and dough; construction and computers; a reading area; a writing table; mathematical and science activities.
Children are taught using the Early Learning Goals in both Nursery and Reception. The goals are split into six areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication, Language and Literacy; Mathematical Development; Knowledge and Understanding of the world;Physical Development and Creative Development.
